As far back as the 1600’s afro hair was seen as a ugly and that it should be hidden. Black women were made to feel ashamed of their hair and required – by any means necessary – to make it resemble European hair and when that wasn’t possible, it had to be covered up.
There is a lot of conditioning to undo. Feeling embarrassed by my hair and thought here was no way you could be seen as attractive. This is a common internal issue many women face but it’s also about the very real external hair discrimination the causes these internalised feelings. Help us bring changes to millions of black women by allowing us to create a better understanding of the characteristics of black hair and provide influence in bringing about change both in schools and workplaces.
